Bees are flying insects, closely related to wasps and ants. There are approximately 20,000 known species of bees.
The most well known bee is the Honey Bee, which, as its name suggests, produces honey as do a few other types of bees.
The
introduced Honey Bee is the only domesticated insect which humans gain
benefit from without actually causing any harm to the animal. Bees are
important as both a honey producer and a pollinator.
Bees
play an important role in pollinating. It is estimated 1/3 of the
human food supply depends on insect pollination. Bees focus on
gathering nectar or pollen, depending on their greater need at the time.
Bees
nest usually in the spring season but can be found nesting in
residential, commercial or public areas all year round. Usually bees
will nest in hollow logs, trees or even in the ground. However bees can
also build a nest inside cavity walls or in roof voids. If Bees feel
the spot is right then they will move in and the Queen and her workers
will then build a nest within the property. A clear sign is a
repetitive use of an entry or exit hole, all day, every day. However if
the position is not suitable, then they will only stick around for up to
a day. If signs of a nest are prevalent then a treatment by a Pest
Professional is required.
The
destruction of the nest is not always the only solution. If a nest
exists on the external areas of a structure then an Apiarist can be
called in to remove it, displacing them to a safer area or a honey farm.
Remember do not try to eliminate them yourself as you will aggrevate the bees putting yourself and others around you in danger. |
